THE Geelong Buccaneers Junior Varsity team’s fantastic opening season came to an end as they lost the grand final to Croydon Rangers at the Vic Bowl.

The under 15 gridiron side has improved markedly over the course of the season.

In just their second game, they lost to Melton Wolves 40-0. But between this match and the grand final against Rangers on Sunday, the Buccaneers have been unbeaten.

Head coach Daniel Noonan said he was delighted with the effort his players had put in across the season.

“We have kids that travel all the way from Timboon to train and play with us each week. This team is committed and has improved so much over the season.

“It has been a whole club effort to put this team on the field – our senior players have stepped up to help coach and develop this next generation of Buccaneers.”

They finished on top of the table, just two points above Rangers having also defeated them by two points earlier in the season.

At the Gridiron Victoria Awards, Buccaneer Junior Varsity player Christian Barsic was awarded Rookie of the Year as well as Defensive MVP. His teammate Jarrah Neilson was also awarded Defensive Line MVP.

The Buccaneers men’s and women’s sides have both had solid seasons, finishing about mid-table.
