THE Victorian Open Series has been given a major revamp, shifting from three separate statewide events to a single bumper weekend surfing event at Bells Beach.
The WorkSafe Victorian Classic will be held on October 18 and October 19 and crown state champions in both open and women’s divisions.
Champions will gain a spot into the Rip Curl Pro Trials, as well as qualification into the Australian Surf Championships.
An exciting new addition to the event will be a $5,000 cash prize split equally across both the open men and women’s division.
A second chance draw will also see surfers take to the water a minimum of two times throughout the event.
Surfing Victoria chief executive officer Adam Robertson welcomed the exciting new change to the format.
“This is the biggest change to the Victorian Open Titles in over 30 years, and will hopefully put the spark back into Open Surfing in Victoria,” said Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson.
“It was clear that the current system needed a re-think to revitalise open surfing in the state. We see this is as a great opportunity for open surfers in the state to get the chance to surf a Championship Tour location.
“We have some incredible surfers across the state and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Bells Beach / Djarrak in October.”
