SURFING Victoria has recommenced Coasting for Teens, with Torquay as one of the program’s chosen locations.

The program initially launched in October 2019 as part of a VicHealth initiative encouraging teenage girls to be active through Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP).

The program ran during Summer but had stopped in March as lockdown restrictions began.

However, with restrictions now easing, and the weather improving Surfing Victoria is eager to resume coasting.

Coasting program manager Monica Fleming said the program was important to people’s mental health as well as their physical health.

“The Coasting program aims to get more young Victorian girls active, however, we have seen over the past few seasons the change it can have on a person’s overall wellbeing,” Ms Fleming said.

“Being out on the water with some friends can really help lift your mood and is a great way to connect with others.

“2020 has been challenging. But we hope to see plenty of young girls out on the water connecting to their communities again.”

Surfing Victoria’s COVID Risk Management Plan includes protocols to ensure participant’s safety, including adhering to social distancing and masks being worn during briefings.

The first session in Torquay is being held today (Thursday, October 1).
