Coutas and Tigers to headline Easter Holiday fixtures

QUEENSCLIFF football coach Rory Nicol says his side will put up a good fight in today’s (Friday, April 7) match against Torquay, despite opening the Bellarine Football League season with a five-point loss to Modewarre.

The Coutas are looking ahead to the tall task of a Good Friday win against a well-versed Torquay Tigers outfit, fresh off a 71-point win against Ocean Grove.

Nicol has gone on record citing the youth within his side, which was evidenced by the 10 seniors debutants fielded on Saturday, however he isn’t willing to put a cap on what the squad is capable of.

“We’ll continue to bring effort week in, week out, that’s what we’re all about,” Nicol said.

“We don’t consider ourselves a side that relies on any one, two or three key players, we’re just developing our juniors across the board and providing a good pathway to our senior ranks.

“We’ve taken a philosophical and holistic approach with our program, trying to get the best out of everyone.”

The Coutas blew a three-goal three-quarter-time lead last weekend to the Warriors, but will hope to put on a good performance against Dom Gleeson’s Tigers.

“We just failed to kick straight on the weekend against Modda, it’s as simple as that, so the main takeaway we have going into our match against Torquay is to do the opposite,” Nicol added.

“If we can make the most of our chances in front of goals, then we can put up a good fight.”

The Coutas, led by captain Caleb Whitley, and vice captains Che Durran and Alex “A.J.” Davie, clash with Torquay at Spring Creek Reserve from 4.10pm on the public holiday.

It forms a triple-feature of games in the BFNL, with Ocean Grove hosting Newcomb (2.10pm) and Modewarre also making the trip to Queens Park for a twilight fixture (5.10pm) against Geelong Amateur.

An Easter Saturday double-header involving Anglesea and Drysdale at Ellimatta Reserve begins at 2.10pm, followed by Barwon Heads and Portarlington at Barwon Heads Park from 2.20pm.
