Dramatic win keeps Surf Coast FC’s promotion hopes alive

SURF Coast Football Club’s Senior Men’s team are still on the hunt for promotion thanks to a dramatic 1-0 win over league leaders Altona North.

With only two games left in the season, Surf Coast FC are now just one point behind Altona but with a superior goal difference.

Surf Coast Captain Tom Langman said it was a difficult win, but a much needed one.

“That keeps our season well and truly alive,” Langman said.

“It was a terrific battle for the full 90 minutes. There were not a lot of clear-cut chances from either side, as you would expect in a first versus second contest and a lot on the line.”

Matt Linney ensured Surf Coast FC maintained their impressive record of scoring in every game this season, netting his 13th of the year in the eleventh minute.

Surf Coast FC seemed to have the win secured when in the second minute of stoppage time Altona were awarded a penalty.

Goalkeeper Thomas Dunn conceded the penalty, but made amends by saving the spot-kick and keeping his team’s promotion hopes alive.

Langman said the penalty save capped off a brilliant performance from Dunn.

“From our point of view, we got Tommy Dunn to thank for taking all three points. He had a brilliant game in goal, but saving that 92nd minute penalty was just amazing.”

Surf Coast FC’s senior women are also battling for promotion but their 4-2 loss to North Geelong Warriors SC on the weekend puts them in a precarious position.

They still sit atop of the table, North Geelong now have the same amount of points of them and a game in hand.

Their final fixture is against Barwon SC before they have a bye in the final round.

Meanwhile, the men’s remaining two fixtures see them play Melbourne University Soccer Club at home, before finishing the season with an away game to Gisborne SC.
