THE state’s largest Indigenous sporting carnival is making its way to the Bellarine, with Portarlington Football Netball Club to host hundreds of footballers and netballers.

Portarlington Recreation Reserve will host two days of action, and thousands of spectators in attendance for the 2024 Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Limited (VACSAL) Statewide Senior Football Netball Carnival.

Taking place on October 5 and October 6, the round robin-style tournament will feature Aboriginal and Torres Strait athletes from across the state, and some from interstate.

This year’s event follows a successful 2023 carnival held at Banyul-Warri Reserve in Torquay North.

VACSAL chief executive officer and Bangerang/Wiradjuri woman Linda Bamblett says high level First Nations will take part in this year’s carnival across football and netball.

“It’s also about bringing together communities from all over the state, it’s not just about sport, it’s a major cultural event that celebrates Aboriginal culture and community as well,” Ms Bamblett said.

“VACSAL understands the impact state-wide sporting events play in the Aboriginal community, contributing to cultural, social and emotional well-being and providing opportunities for community development.”

The event, put on by VACSAL and co-hosted by Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, has more than 30 teams, 500 participants, and 100 volunteers registered to take part.

“It is acknowledged that sport and recreation are fundamental elements of Aboriginal lifestyle, and that sport has a positive impact on health, culture, and wellbeing,” Ms Bamblett said.

“The talent spectators will see at the carnival is just amazing, we’ll also have a couple of Indigenous former AFL players and former top-tier netballers there too – it’s just amazing to be a part of.”

Locals are encouraged to attend on either day, with entry free to all guests. Family-friendly rides, entertainment and activities will be on offer.
