GEELONG United’s WNBL team has relaunched with a new name, and will now be known as Geelong Venom.

The club says the process took eight weeks, with an initial list of more than 100 names narrowed down to 14 contenders.

These 14 contenders were further reduced to just two – Geelong Force (“Ruthless. United. Controlled”) and Geelong Venom (“Instinctive. Tactical. Fierce”) – with feedback from fans leading to Venom getting the nod.

“Inspired by Australia’s deadliest snakes, this season and beyond our squad hit the court representing a name born and built to strike,” Geelong United stated earlier today (Tuesday, July 1).

“Every movement embodies precision and power, combining the lethal accuracy of venom with the unstoppable force of nature.

“This team thrives on sharp instincts and unyielding confidence, moving seamlessly to dominate every play.

“Venom runs in their veins: lethal, confident, unapologetic.”

Geelong United chief executive officer Mark Neeld said it was an exciting time both for his club and the wider WNBL.

“When creating our new identity, we wanted to make sure we chose something that fans could really get behind as a strong representation of our region.

“The Geelong Venom rebrand not only matches the new direction of the league itself, but will be a driving force in the future of women’s basketball for our city as a brand that young players can aspire to be a part of through our Geelong basketball pathway.”

The WNBL 2025-26 season begins on October 18, with the Venom to play the Sydney Flames at home at the Geelong Arena.
