Happy sailing

KITHBROOKE Yacht Club commodore Bill White says you don’t have to be on the beach to sail a yacht.

While playing outdoor bowls on a windy day, Mr White looked across the waterway and had the idea of sailing remote controlled yachts. After floating the idea with others, he quickly had seven participants.

With a lake, waterway, and a launching site right outside their villas, homeowners at Kithbrooke Park Country Club could simply walk out the front door and launch their yacht.

Participants, most who have never actually sailed, purchased their own remote-controlled yacht which are over half a metre long and sail at a speed of five knots.

Now with twenty-two participating members, the sailing group meet each week for a regatta and some friendly racing. The event now includes handicap and match racing and is likely to include twilight events in the Summer.

“The activity is a good break where we can get outdoors, enjoy the day, get some fresh air and social distance all at the same time,” Mr White commented.

The sailing group meet every Thursday and are looking forward to the warmer months when more people plan to get on board.
