TORQUAY Cricket Club has named its new president heading into the 2022/23 season.

The Tigers committee unanimously appointed Torquay local Tim Humphries to the club’s top job following the departure of Rob Dunne from the role.

“I’m honoured to take on the role and keen to assist in any way I can to move the club forward,” Humphries said.

Humphries started with the Tigers as a junior before going on to play for more than a decade at the senior level.

He captained the club’s Second XI premiership side in 2014-15 and was also an active contributor off the field, serving as vice president between 2013 and 2015.

Humphries will have the backing of co-vice presidents Terry Hill and Mark Patton, fellow executive members Chris Speldewinde (secretary) and Nigel Sullivan (treasurer), as well as a dedicated committee.

He said he was confident the club, with its existing committee, was well placed to set up for a bright future.

“We are looking to achieve on-field success for our men’s teams, led by our new coach Leigh Kentish, and really importantly, aiming to continue to grow participation in our women’s and junior programs.

“We also need to work productively with the football and netball clubs to secure long-term, year-round success at Spring Creek Reserve.”

Dunne, who stepped away at the end of the 2021-22 season after four years in the role, was sincerely thanked by the club for his tenure.

He was awarded the prestigious Barry Sexton Trophy for best club person in April, recognising his tireless work as president.
The Tigers are welcoming new men’s, women’s and junior players of all standards for the coming season.

Men’s pre-season training begins on August 1 at the Barwon Valley Activity Centre in Belmont.

The club will hold a women’s “come and try” night on August 3 at the same venue.
