Jan Juc hosts Surfer Grom Comps

March 20, 2019 BY

Remy Filer is chaired off the beach by Donovan Currie and Leroy Filer.

LAST weekend Jan Juc played host to the final event in the Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps presented by Pic’s Peanut Butter 2018/19 series.

More than 70 of Victoria’s up and coming young surfers converged on the beach to be greeted by sunny Surf Coast skies and small but contestable conditions.

Torquay Boardriders Club were generously represented with almost 30 of our spirited junior club members competing in the event.

The calibre of surfing by all competitors throughout the weekend was incredible. The talented field of surfers vying for positions in the finals fought tough battles through the first two rounds.

The depth of talent in the TBC junior ranks shone through in the final rounds – the under 10 boys final was in fact an all TBC affair!

Congratulations to all TBC members who made the finals – Archie Donaldson (u8), Anna Huppatz, Chloe Muscroft, Cedar Davies (u10g), Jack Lindsay, Duke Orr, Jarvis Barrow, Remy Filer (u10b), Juliet Muscroft, Sara Hickson, Isla Huppatz (u12g), Remy Filer (u12b), Emily McGettigan, Mia Huppatz (u14g), Nalu Belyea and Tanner Reid (u14b).

Special note must go to those groms who charged their way to claim victory in their age divisions.

Cedar Davies and Remy Filer took out the Under 10 division in style. Isla Huppatz won the under 12 girls crown in a fantastic heat which included a strong 9-point ride.

Mia Huppatz and Tanner Reid illustrated what promising surfing futures they have by winning the Under 14 divisions. For their efforts both Huppatz and Reid have won a trip to attend an all-expensespaid, three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC).

Three specialty awards also came TBC’s way with Isla Huppatz winning the Pic’s Peanut Butter Star Performer, Duke Orr claimed the Woolworths Fresh Wave award and the Air Asia air of the day went to Jarvis Barrow.

While the smaller groms dominated their local break this weekend, a couple of TBC’s senior groms were in NSW competing at the 2019 Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior.

Congratulations to Xavier Huxtable who made it through to the semi finals, narrowly missing a berth in the final.

Look forward to seeing TBC members at our next aggregate competitions – Seniors on March 23 and Juniors on March 30.

Go hard or go home!
