Joeys eager to improve communication
ST JOSEPH’S coach Ron Watt was pleased with the way his charges bounced back against South Barwon after their disappointing loss to Newtown and Chilwell.
The GFL ladder-leader beat the Swans by 62 points at home after losing to the Eagles by 25 points in the wet the week before.
Joeys kept the Swans at arms-length throughout, with Paddy De Grandi kicking five goals.
“We knew we had to put in a strong performance and I think we actually worked through the game really well and it took a while to crack them,” Watt said.
“But once we cracked them a bit and kept persevering with good basic football principles, we came out with a good win.”
He reflected on the Eagles loss, St Joseph’s only defeat of the season.

“We just need to improve on our communication and our ability to take care of the basics.
“It was tougher the week before because of the conditions and there was sometimes good intent, but we didn’t finish off very well with our ball use.
“We can put a lot of that down to the weather, but also put it down to maybe not focusing on the game that’s right in front of you and just drifting off a little bit.”
St Joseph’s play Bell Park away tomorrow Saturday, June 21 in Round 9 at 2.10pm at Hamlyn Park.
The Dragons have won their past four games since playing Joeys.
“They throw a few things at you that you’ve really got to concentrate on and their contest at the ball is strong,” Watt said.
“I’m hoping that we get another good game.
“The draw this year has been much better for us playing against harder opposition week in, week out, and I think that’s standing us in good stead.”
