LOCAL junior surfing talent thrived in the Woolworths Surfer Grom Comp, held at Torquay Surf Beach over the weekend.

The event saw surfers compete in categories from Under 8 to Under 14.

The Under 14 Boys final was particularly close, with less than a single point separating the top three.

In the end it was Barwon Heads’ Jack Bassett who took victory. He said he was very pleased with both the conditions and his own performance.

“I’m stoked to walk away with the win today. This event is so fun and the waves were awesome.”

Mornington Peninsula’s Sarsha Pancic won the Under 14 Girls final. It was a similarly close affair, as Sarah Hickson, also from the Mornington Peninsula, finished just 0.29 points behind, followed by Sarah Sueren (Inverloch) and Jessica McGettigan (Torquay).

Panicic was praised the skill of Hickson and her other competitors, saying “Thanks to all the girls for a great final”.

Hickson won the Under 12 Girls final, with a brilliant score of 16.17.

There was once more little to separate the finalists in the Under 12 Boys category, with the top three once again being separated by less than a point. Remy Filer (Torquay) emerged victorious, just beating Rye Cicero and Jarvis Barrow.

Elsie Chapman (Point Lonsdale) won the Under 10 Girls, while Kai Coleman (Armstrong Creek) won the Under 10 Boys and Bay Lamperd (Barwon Heads) took victory in the Under 8 Mixed.

The Woolworths Fresh Wave Award went to Lucas Hickson and Sarah Sueren for their good sportsmanship throughout the event.
Pic’s Peanut Butter Pathway Performer awards were given to Jarvis Barrow and Maeve Wilkinson for their outstanding performances over the weekend.
