Locals drafted for AFLW

Luka Lesosky-Hay was selected by Richmond in Round 5 of the draft.

FIVE Geelong Falcons footballers got the call they were hoping for in last week’s AFL Women’s draft.

Darcy Moloney, Laura Gardiner, Stephanie Williams, Carly Remmos, and Luka Lesosky-Hay all played for the Falcons in the shortened 2020 season.

Maloney, Gardiner, Williams, and Remmos were drafted for the Geelong Cats, while Lesosky-Hay was drafted for Richmond.

Lesosky-Hay was overlooked in last year’s draft and said she was delighted to not only to be selected but to be chosen by the Tigers

“I couldn’t be happier with where I ended up this year.

“I trained with Richmond a couple of times before and got along really well with the staff and players and really loved the culture at the club.”

The black and yellow kit will be familiar to Lesosky-Hay having previously played a season with the Torquay Tigers.

While it was a season interrupted by injury for Lesosky-Hay, she recalled her time at Torquay fondly and said it was a “super supportive club”.

Unlike Lesosky-Hay, Remmos was not part of 2019’s draft, as at that stage she was not even playing football.

Remmos recently made the switch from basketball having previously played for the Geelong Supercats.

She said being drafted was a welcome surprise.

“The season was cut short and those were the only two games of football I have ever played, so it was very surprising to be drafted after only two games.

“I was just happy to be drafted in general, whatever team drafted me, but I did think about it and being drafted by Geelong is good because it’s local.”
