Mid-weekers grand finals
A SIMPLY perfect day, weather-wise greeted players for the midweek ladies grand final matches on Tuesday, June 11.
Lucky perhaps, as the following day saw it rain non-stop!
Tennis In Geelong’s Phil Hunt went to the very picturesque Point Lonsdale courts to catch grades 10 and 11 play their grand finals – and what close and hard-fought matches they both turned out to be!
Midweek competition featured 11 grades of players, from clubs as far-flung as Aireys Inlet to Portarlington and equating to about 350 players.
And the results? Grade 1, Wandana Heights d Grovedale; grade 2, Surfcoast Blue d Surfcoast Black; grade 3, Winchelsea d Drysdale; grade 4, Moriac d Barwon Heads; grade 5, Eastern Districts d Highton Blue; grade 6, St. Marys d Barwon Heads Blue; grade 7, Highton Gold d Portarlington; grade 8, Highton d Drysdale; grade 9, Clifton Springs d St. Stephens; grade 10, Leopold d Moolap; grade 11, Moolap Black d Grovedale.
Big wins by Wandana Heights in grade 1 and Surfcoast Blue in grade 2, while Highton teams in grade 7 and 8 both got home by a single game. In grade 10 it was a draw and Leopold won the playoff set.
Midweek competition begins again on Tuesday, July 16th. And it can’t come soon enough for these ladies!
