Modewarre to field senior women’s side

October 1, 2020 BY

Renegades Country player Chloe Smith is among those signed up for Modewarre Cricket Club's senior women's team for the upcoming season.

THIS season, Modewarre Cricket Club will be fielding a women’s team for the first time in its history.

Modewarre’s initial interest in joining the competition was largely instigated by one family.

Kimberley Wemyss played for Torquay in the Geelong Cricket Association’s (GCA) inaugural senior women’s competition last season.

Kimberley’s brother Brendan Wemyss is president of Modewarre Cricket Club. He said their family was deeply entrenched in the club and were eager for Kimberley to have the opportunity to don the maroon and blue herself.

“Kim played at Torquay last year and loved her time there. But our family’s been at Modewarre pretty much all our lives, so she really wanted the possibility of playing at Modewarre like I had and her dad as well as a lot of her uncles and cousins.”

Wemyss said it soon became clear there were plenty of other women interested in playing for Modewarre.

“We weren’t sure what response we would get but it’s been great

“It’s just about making cricket accessible and enjoyable, as it’s just a couple of hours on a Sunday.”

Modewarre Cricket Club junior co-ordinator Carl Jones has been helping set up the women’s team.

He said he felt it would be a great addition to the club.

“It’s probably in the past 12 months we really started thinking about it as a way to grow the club member base and become more inclusive.”

The club already has enough players signed up to field a team and are hoping to have a few more join before the season starts.

Jones said the players come from varying backgrounds.

“There’s about three that have played competitively previously. Some of the others involved are the Modewarre netballers, and some are local mothers of our junior players.”

People interested in joining can contact the club via its Facebook page or phone Brendan Wemyss on 0400 176 681.
