THE next generation of surfing stars will have the chance to surf against with their friends in a first of its kind surfing event this weekend in Torquay.

The Victorian Micro Groms Cup will feature competition first timers in the U/8’s parent-assist division all the way through to the premier U/14 Boys and Girls age categories.

The all-inclusive event will focus on fun and giving an insight into the structure of a professionally-run surf competition.

Local surfers set to appear include Alby O’Day (Torquay), Estella Carbonelli (Jan Juc), Harlem Pec (Jan Juc) and Olive Robertson (Jan Juc).

Surfing Victoria high performance coaching director Cahill Bell-Warren said he looked forward to watching the state’s best juniors in action.

“The Surf Better Now Victorian Micro Groms comp is an exciting addition to this years calendar.

“The format and divisions involved allow for a large segment of the field to compete in their first surfing completion, others to step up from their local Boardriders to their first Surfing Victoria event and for those established in the competitive pathways to secure national ranking points.

“Most importantly though, the event provides an opportunity for Victorian surfers from all over to gather and form new friendships and relationships that they’ll hold for many years to come.”
