Portarlington Golf Club – June 28, 2018

June 27, 2018 BY

THE cost of playing golf is something we’d rather not think about, but it is something that has to be considered at this time of the year. Our annual fees, that are due before the end of June, currently stand at close to $1,200 for a normal adult seven-day membership, competition fees for the member who may play twice a week is around $800 per year, plus the ongoing replacing of clothing and equipment, which could be anything. For most of us, golf is by far the biggest household bill we fork out for on an annual basis. So, let’s enjoy it!

Tuesday June 19, Men’s Stableford
A field of 141 players was a good turnout for this time of the year, but a DSR of 73 is an indication that the conditions were not easy; 39 points was the score of the day, and that was by Matt Barnes, also winning B Grade from Rob Kearton who had 36. Sean Rodwell was top A Grader with 38 ahead of Cliff McCorkell by a point, Ray Brownhill’s 38 won him the C Grade voucher on a countback from Ian Fraser, and a 36 by Ian Davis was enough to top the D Graders by a point from Chris James. The NTPs were collected by Marty Gowling, Bernard Reed and Richard West, and Rhys Millard pocketed the ProPin.

Wednesday June 20, Ladies’ 4BBB Par
It was the 2nd round of the Ladies 4BBB 54 hole aggregate, and a good one for Beth Peterson and Chris Noble, who headed a field of 30 pairs with a score of +5. Next pair were Cathy Strachan and Pat Worsley with +4, only a countback ahead of both Marg Howell and Jeanette Johnson, and Chris Watson and Helen Davey. Jacky Rowe got greedy and collected a NTP and the 0-25 ProPin, the other NTP going to Megan Siotos, and the 26-45 ProPin to Marg Quick. Over the 2 weeks played, Marg Howell and Jeanette Johnson lead the field into the final round with +9, only 1 point ahead of three pairs.

Saturday June 23, Men’s and Ladies’ Stableford
With a south-westerly feeling like it was coming straight off the Antarctica, we still managed a good field of 152 men and 35 ladies participating. Well done to Andrew Wootton, who scored Trophy of the Day and B Grade with a very creditable 41 points. B Grade runner-up was John Cranston with 40, Alan Sweeney topped the A Graders with 40 by a point from Brian Barrell, Kevin Godfrey got the C Grade voucher with 38 from the other Wootton, John with 37, and Rodney Allen’s 38 was best D Grade score from Colin Doyle’s 36. The NTP shots went to Matthew McFarlane, Brian Barrell and Tremayne Kaiser, and the ProPin went to Micky McNeill.
