Portarlington Golf Club – March 8, 2018

March 7, 2018 BY

ONE of our popular events was held recently, the Taffy and Jean Carpenter Mixed Pinehurst, which attracted 18 pairs, many of whom were married couples putting their marriage on the line, such is the nature of the event!

However, I believe it is character building for our lovely ladies to have to hit balls from positions they’ve never been in before! Well done to Helen and John Powe, who were victorious with a nett score of 73, just holding out Cheryl Johnstone and Gordon Atkins by ⅝ of a point. Helen and John remain happily married.

Tuesday February 27, Men’s 4BBB Stableford
Glorious conditions prevailed for the 144 men entered, with Ron Hansen and visitor John Mitchell from Portland GC taking out top honours with a score of 49 points, a point clear of the two Johns, Kennedy and Cranston.

John Bowman and Henry Wasiak were a further point back in 3rd place. Lindsay Powell also had a profitable day by scoring an eagle on the 13th which got him the ProPin and a NTP on the 5th. Other NTPs were won by Henry Wasiak and Simon Grundell.

Wednesday February 28, Ladies’ Stroke
March medal day brought out 61 ladies, plus another nine in the optional stableford comp. Liz Culph went home a happy lady with a medal after scoring a nett 70, to also win C Grade from Helen Newitt’s 76. Anne Watts took out the B Grade voucher with 72 from Lynne Kirby’s 75, and Jeanette Johnson was top of the A Graders with 72 from a 74 by Joy Francis. The NTPs were struck by Pat Peacock, Anne Watts and Cheryl Johnstone, Jacky Rowe continued her habit of collecting the 0-25 ProPin with Sandra Kearton taking out the 26-45 ProPin, Rebecca Waldron had the best gross score with 86, and Jenny Durante was best on the putting green. Kaye Randall had 34 points to top the stableford event.

Saturday March 3, Men’s and Ladies’ Stroke
March medal day for the 167 men out to enjoy the great conditions we are so lucky to have at the PGC. With a sensational score of nett 64 off a handicap of 11, Bob Perry won the medal and A Grade from Andrew Wootten’s 67. Also on 67 was Skeeta Howard to top the B Graders from a 70 by Mike Kerry, Mark Beasley was best of the C Graders with 67 from Neale Keskinen’s 69, and big bad Steve Cogger hit a few fairways to beat all the D Graders with 70 to roll Ian Pardy on a countback. The pinshots went to Sean Rogers, Chris McCulloch and Lindsay Powell, and Craig Plummer got the ProPin. Best of the ladies was Jenny Edmanson with a ProPin and 72 to topple Lou Blomley on a countback. NTPs went to Jan Cogger and Angela Royal.
