Portarlington Golf Club – May 31, 2018

May 30, 2018 BY

THERE is obviously a lot more to the Portarlington Golf Club than just the golf! Our history book tells us about the developing stages of the club from a very basic 6-hole course to what it is today. The club’s history was documented in its centenary year, 2009, and its concluding remarks included: “They also enjoy a Bistro that is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week, not to mention the Poker Machines for when they’re feeling lucky. The club has become a focal point within the local community with many community groups using the club’s facilities to conduct their meetings, etc.” We have since added a TAB and upgraded the kitchen to be able to cater for the big numbers that seem to be constantly streaming through our doors, and our renovated Pro Shop is now a thriving retail store for all our golfing related needs.

Tuesday, May 22, Men’s Stableford – Guest day: A good field of 150 men, including 12 guests enjoyed a great golfing day. Sam Beeston continued his fine form to put together 43 points, including an eagle and a NTP, to win trophy of the day and A Grade by a point from Brian Hazell. Ian Loughlan was best B Grader with 38 to be one point clear of Stephen Steele, a 38 by Rob Atkinson won him C Grade from Len Banicevic’s 34, and 41 was Trevor Drew’s score to top D Grade from Kas Saldukas’ 40. The other NTPs were scored by guests Michael Doherty and Brian Spalding, Josh Williams took home the ProPin and Geoff Cowan from 13th Beach topped the guests with 34.

Wednesday, May 23, Ladies’ Foursomes: 66 ladies lined up for the annual Doreen Hogan trophy, and Judy Said took home the spoils with 38 points, also topping B Grade on a c/b from Joyce Vagg. A Grade winner was Jacky Rowe with 35 on a c/b from Judy Webber, and Joyce Livermore headed C Grade with 38 from Carmel Scarff with 36. Joyce Vagg and Sue Watts got the NTP’s, and Jenny Champion (0-25) and Alison Kennedy (26-45) won the ProPins. The May Silver Spoon went to Chris Trezise.

Saturday, May 26, Men’s and Ladies’ 4BBB Par – W. Hemsworth trophy:

Perfect, sunny conditions met the 167 men and 30 ladies for the second successive 4-ball event. This keenly contested annual trophy was won by Ken Foxcroft & Cliff McCorkell with an amazing 11 up – what happened to the other 7 holes fellas? Lloyd James & Anthony Swain secured 2nd place with +9 by a shot from Jim Pyke & Joel Launer, Ray Hazell & Bob Perry taking the remaining minor placing also on +8. The pinshots were cracked by Tremayne Kaiser, Brian Kelly and Bob Gibbs, and Peter Steele got the ProPin cash.
