Portarlington Golf Club – October 26, 2017

November 23, 2017 BY

A REGULAR happening at the Portarlington Golf Club is the charity days, and we have already started the ball rolling this season with more than 80 starters in both the Lions Club event on October 20, and the Red Cross event on October 23. These events prove to be very popular with golfers, as apart from the most worthwhile charities they support, are most enjoyable social golfing days with great food and prizes usually a part of the occasion. The next one is the “Mission to Seafarers” on November 20: 9am shotgun start, a Stableford event for both ladies and men with great prizes and lunch included in the $40 entry fee. For more info phone the Pro shop, entries close on November 13.

Wednesday October 18, Ladies’ Stableford
60 ladies turned out to play in great conditions, and Gweneth Barnett topped them all with 39 points, also getting the B Grade chocolates by a point from Ann Watts. Joy Francis led the A Graders with 36 by a point from Sue Watts, and a 37 by Judy Fox won her C Grade from Joyce Livermore’s 35. The pinshots were struck by Susan Plummer and Marilyn Mooney, and the ProPins by Angie Foott (0-25) and Marg Quick (26-45).

Thursday October 19, Men’s Stableford
With the greens being renovated on Tuesday, this became the mens main day for the week, although the rain kept many potential starters away. However, there were 60 diehards, and Len Banicevic did best with 40 points, to also top B Grade from a 37 by Rob Stiglbauer. Allan Hall’s 38 was the best A Grade score, 1 point ahead of Brendan King. The NTP’s were won by Leighton Hamblin, Brian Kelly and Arthur Johnson, and Leigh Wilson got the ProPin.

Saturday, October 21, Men’s and Ladies’ Stableford
It was great to play on the ever-changing fairways as the weather warms up. The santa ana growth was quite evident to the players, and a lower DSR reflected the easier playing conditions. A brilliant score of 45 points by Sean Ward won the day from the 151 men, also comfortably leading the D Graders from Matt Tomkinson’s 39. David Hyslop topped A Grade with 40 by a point from David Watson, a 40 by Peter Garlick led the B Graders from Nipper Dodd’s 39, and Ian Deller was best in C Grade with 41 from a 38 by Rick Korb. The NTP’s were collected by David Burke, John Hill and Nipper Dodds, and Lee McMurrich scored the ProPin cash. There were also 28 ladies playing, the best on the day being Sandy Issell with 39, edging out Sonia Dall on a countback. The NTP’s went to Diane Roede and Kay Williams, with Rebecca Waldron taking out the ProPin.
