Roos happy at halfway point

DESPITE Anglesea’s six-goal defeat to the Bellarine Football League’s reigning premiers over the weekend, the Roos’ player-coach is happy where his side sits at the halfway point of the season.

Anglesea’s Jordan Keras noted his senior side’s terrific form over the past five rounds – excluding the club’s 36-point loss to Barwon Heads – emerging on top in four of those contests and now sit in fourth place with five wins, three losses and a draw, putting them on track for a return to the BFL finals.

“To be honest we probably just lost to Barwon Heads on account of our own errors,” Keras said.

“Credit to our boys, we wanted to play the way we wanted to play, but on a smaller ground at Barwon Heads, which they defend on really well, they were just a bit more polished than we were.

“We think that at the halfway point of the season, we’re really happy to be sitting in fourth, we’re still putting it all together and I’d argue we have yet to put together a full four-quarter effort this year.”

Keras and his side return home to Ellimatta Reserve this Saturday, June 10 to host a Queenscliff side that forced Anglesea to compete for four quarters in Round 5; the Roos eventually winning by 30 points, 79-109.

But the Anglesea co-coach said the Coutas were the biggest threat outside the top five.

“Saturday’s game is really important to us.

“It’s a critical game in the season, Queenscliff is sitting just outside the five and they’re probably the most dangerous side in that group of teams looking in.

“With them just a couple wins behind us, it’s certainly an eight-point game this week and we’ll be making sure that we play our style of footy and be fully prepared.

“Queenscliff is an exciting team, but hopefully we can replicate what we did to them a few weeks ago.”

Anglesea forward Dylan Pettingill kicked six majors against the Seagulls last weekend, sliding him up into a tie for second among the league’s leading goal kickers.

The former St Albans product and second-year Roo has accumulated 34 goals, next to Geelong Amateur’s Jai Sheahan.

Fellow forward Liam Holland will also look to provide a boost on the scoreboard, after kicking four of his own against the reigning premiers last week.

Anglesea midfielder Lewis Beers is likely to return to the side after being concussed a fortnight ago against Ocean Grove.
