State’s best to wax up at traditional logger event
VICTORIA’s best and most stylish traditional longboard surfers will descend on Point Impossible next weekend for the inaugural West Coast Wax Up event.
The February 3 surfing showcase will feature individual categories, an old malibu (pre-1968) division and a team’s extravaganza.
The event will have equal prize money up for grabs for both men’s and women’s competitors.
An after-party function will be held post-event at Bells Beach Brewing, with bands and DJs slated to sail surfers and partygoers away into the sunset.
West Coast Wax Up event director Glenn Barry said entries for the men’s division of the event sold out in just under ten minutes, while the rest sold out within 72 hours.
“Hopefully that’s a good omen for this being a really great event!” he said.
“The West Coast Wax Up is all about bringing our community together to celebrate our love for traditional longboard surfing.
“We’ve assembled arguably one of the best lineups of Victorian surfers in recent memory, so it’s going to be absolute fireworks out there in the water.
“We’ve got some amazing sponsors who will be giving us away plenty of epic prizes, awesome entertainment ready to pop at the after party, and plenty of excitement and fun still to be announced.
“We can’t wait to see all the fun go down.”
Mr Barry said it was fantastic to see such a breadth of talent from across the state enter to be part of the event.
“I think the community resonate with everything the event is about, and that’s fun,” he said.
“We’ve got the best of the best coming from the Surf Coast, Bellarine, Phillip Island, Mornington Peninsula and even some from Apollo Bay.
“A huge thanks to the Surf Coast Longboarders Club for really helping us spread the word. It’s certainly going to be one not to miss.”
The West Coast Wax Up will be livestreamed by Carve Media on Facebook and YouTube.
A traditional smoking ceremony will open the event around 7am.
