GEELONG United Basketball will have the “visionary” pair of Brendon Matthews and Luke Beard back guiding its Big V Youth League Women’s and Men’s sides respectively in 2025.

The pair will continue in their head coaching duties in the upcoming season, with the aim of bringing home a championship to Geelong.

Since arriving at the club, Matthews has made waves in the coaching realm, transforming Geelong United’s Youth League from a bottom-two finish in 2023 to a powerhouse team who reached the preliminary final in 2024.

“His tactical genius, relentless passion, and unwavering commitment” to the team has seen him work tirelessly to align the Youth League style of play with the elite standards of the NBL1 Women.

“Brendon’s leadership has not only inspired the next generation of female basketball talent, but he has also fostered a culture of growth, resilience, and high-performance that resonates through every level of our club,” the club stated.

“He has set a benchmark for excellence. We wish Brendon the very best for the upcoming season.”

Youth League men’s coach Luke Beard used his strategic brilliance to guide his side to a Grand Final in season 2024.

Known for his ability to cultivate a winning mentality with an “unmatched level of experience, wisdom and leadership”, Beard will be hoping to go one better in season 2025.

“Luke’s influence goes beyond the court,” the club said.

“He’s a mentor, a motivator, and a leader who commands respect from players and coaches alike.

“His vision for the future of our Youth League Men’s program is clear, and we can’t wait to see the magic he’ll bring in 2025.”

Youth League squads across the women’s and men’s teams are set to be finalised shortly, with the final tryouts being held last weekend.

The Big V Youth League seasons are slated to begin in April 2025.
