Supercats to celebrate First Nations people

Geelong Supercats will celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of First Nations people while facing the Waverley Falcons at Geelong Area tomorrow night.

Geelong’s NBL1 men and women will don a new First Nations jersey designed by proud Wemba Wemba man and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Operative board member David Flagg to coincide with the NBL1’s nationwide First Nations Round and NAIDOC Week.

“NAIDOC Week is a week where we can acknowledge the history and culture of all First Nations people,” Geelong United Basketball CEO Mark Neeld said.

“We are especially grateful for David’s design and the role it will play in celebrating First Nations people.”

“The club is also excited to announce that the uniform worn during this season’s NBL1 First Nations round on Saturday will also become the permanent uniform for all senior pathways teams in 2023.”

Geelong joins fellow NBL1 South clubs Casey, Ballarat, Knox, Bendigo, Mt Gambier, Eltham, and Ringwood in producing specially made First Nations uniforms.

“It’s a massive pat on the back to Geelong United and the Supercats that they want to embrace our culture and our community along with us,” Wathaurong Co-Op CEO Simon Flagg said.

“For us it’s very exciting and it makes us very proud to see Aboriginal designs on the Supercats uniforms.

“It shows there are organisations that want to work and partner up with Aboriginal people like ourselves, it isn’t just a piece of paper or putting a flag up, it’s a genuine commitment to make our culture a part of theirs and I just think it’s awesome.”

Tomorrow night’s clashes with the Falcons is approaching a sell-out crowd and will also celebrate the 300-game and 100-game milestones of Alex Duck and Sara Blicavs.
