Tenace plays his hand for Ammos’ top job

GEELONG Amateur coach Kane Tenace has revealed he is keen to take the reins of the BFL powerhouse in 2021.
With uncertainty surrounding whether this season will go ahead as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tenace says conversations with the club around next year are yet to start.
However, the former Geelong speedster is keen to build on an impressive 2019, where Ammos surprised many to finish on top of the ladder at the end of the home-and-away season before being knocked out of the premiership race in the preliminary final.
“I think I’d be keen to go again even if we were under way this year,” Tenace said.
“I really enjoyed last year, and for the time up until we got to stay home, I was really enjoying it as well.
“It’s just a matter of sitting down with the club and working out what’s going to be best for both parties.”
Tenace was looking forward to the chance to build on last year’s effort before the start of the season was delayed less than three weeks before Round 1.
However, he is now coaching a club remotely, which he admits is a juggling act.
“It’s something no club has had to deal with before,” Tenace said.
For us, it’s just about keeping in touch with the players, and not from a coaching point of view; just making sure the players stay in touch.
“We’ve set up a couple of challenges for the guys to do fitness-wise, so they can keep their fitness up and be ready to go if needed.”
The former Geelong Cats speedster concedes there is little they can do with players having differing levels of motivation during the shutdown.
“If training was on and they weren’t showing up you’d tell them they’re playing in the reserves,” Tenace said.
“At the end of the day, the guys who are going to do the work are going to do it.”
