Torquay Canning celebrate their win at Lara Reserve.

TORQUAY Canning has become the Under 15 Division 2 premiers after a tense final against Ocean Grove.

Coach Brad Skerke said he was delighted at the growth his players had shown.

“The girls have been training since March. Some of them have come up from Under 12s, some had never played before, and a few had come from other areas that didn’t facilitate girls footy, so they were a bit of a mixed bunch,” Skerke said.

“They ended up coming together really well as a team and to get the result that we did is really fantastic.”

Torquay finished atop of what proved to be a highly competitive division, with only 10 points separating first place from last.

It was then fitting that the final was a similarly close game.

Torquay settled into the game quickly, and after the first quarter led 9-0. However, Ocean Grove responded well in the second quarter and at half-time the two sides were level.

From there Torquay began to pull away, finishing the game 31-19.

The Under 15 side were the first female team from Torquay to reach a grand final, and now they are also the first to win one.

Making the occasion even more special is that the club now has a pair of father-daughter premiership winners, with Gabrielle Hayward’s father Luke, and Kiki Murphy’s father Peter having won premierships with the club as well.
