Victoria claim Wieland Shield

VICTORIA emerged victorious against California over the long weekend in the prestigious Wieland Shield lifesaving competition.

The best athletes from both areas gathered at Ocean Grove beach and Anglesea beach for a healthy and competitive battle of the fittest.

The event, which returned for the first time since 2018, saw teams compete in races including surf ski, swimming, board relay, taplin and run-swim-run.

 

Victoria led early in proceedings on Friday last week with some strong results, before putting their foot down on Saturday to claim the overall points score 84 to 66.

Life Saving Victoria general manager of sports participation Ryan O’Connor said it was thrilling to see everyone back on the beach.

 

“It was the first one held since the pandemic, so it was great to have some healthy competition going again between these two powerhouses.

“The Wieland Shield, which dates back to 1967 is not just about competition, its friendships, it’s the exchanging of vital lifesaving information and a full cultural exchange.

“We had 10 debutants on the team for Victoria from various local clubs, highlighted by some great performances from youngsters Mia Cook, Jemma and Paige Holt and Xavier Purcell.

“Talks are already in place for the Victoria to head to California in the next few years. We can’t wait.”
