Warriors and Roos meet again for spot in grand final
Modewarre (3rd) vs. Anglesea (2nd) @ Mortimer Oval – Drysdale, Saturday 2.10pm
ANOTHER chapter in the emerging rivalry between Modewarre and Anglesea will be written when the two success-starved clubs meet in Saturday’s preliminary final at Drysdale’s Mortimer Oval. It will be the second meeting in three weeks between the pair, with the Warriors having the better of the Roos by 25 points in the qualifying final on August 18. They meet again after Modewarre was unable to match Barwon Heads in the second semifinal, while Anglesea avoided a second straight-sets exit in three years in beating Geelong Amateur in the first semi-final. The Roos snapped a 15-game losing streak dating back to early 2011 against Ammos, with Jordan Erskine returning to form up forward with four goals, taking him to 78 for the season. In their previous meeting, Anglesea got as much as 19 points clear of Modewarre, before the Warriors stormed home. Roos coach Paul Carson was disappointed that day with his team’s inability to go the distance with Modewarre after opening up a handy break. However, he was more than pleased with their response against Geelong Amateur, who led at one stage during the third quarter. The Warriors will be hoping goal kicking midfielder Mitch Fisher was able to beat a rough conduct charge at the AFL Barwon Tribunal on Tuesday night. Fisher was offered a one-week set penalty by the Match Review Panel but chose to challenge the offer. Barwon Heads will be patiently awaiting the result of the preliminary final after taking the most direct route to their first grand final in 25 years in beating Modewarre by 63 points. Co-coach Mitch Herbison starred with six goals, while Damien Horbury continued an impressive first season at the club with three goals. Kyle Polley and Sam Evans also impressed for the Seagulls, who are without a premiership since 1993.
