THE Wreck2Reef Open Water Swim will be one of four swims which make up the prestigious Great Victorian Swim Series (GVSS) this summer.

In what will be the 12th annual Wreck2Reef, held at Indented Head Yacht Club on February 13, it is exciting news for the swim. GVSS director Gina Harris said this was a decision brought about by the open water swimmers themselves.

“(It is) by popular demand,” Ms Harris said.

“Several of our Great Victorian Swim Series swimmers recommended we include Wreck2Reef in the series.”

The Wreck2Reef will be the second race in the GVSS with the Mornington Twilight Swim kickstarting the series on January 15 while the GVSS is rounded out by Cerberus on February 20 before the final WOW swim event at Williamstown on February 28.

The Wreck2Reef event is the only Bellarine based open water swim in the series.

“Wreck2Reef is the new kid on the block,” Ms Harris said.

GVSS would normally have 10-12 swims involved, but due to COVID-19 restrictions the series has been reduced to four swims this summer.

Nearby open water swims including the Rip View Classic and Queenscliff180 Family Swim have been cancelled this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We usually have 10 to 12 events in the series,” Ms Harris said.

“This season only four swims will be going ahead.

“GVSS swimmers usually try to compete in all events in the series.”

The Great Victorian Swim Series is a not-for-profit club promoting fitness and fun among swimmers and supporters of the Victorian open water swim community.
