WEAR Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day gives locals the chance to show their appreciation for Victoria State Emergency Services (VICSES) volunteers just like Joshua Harrison.<\/p>\n
Joshua, 15, is a junior member with the Bellarine Unit, South West Region, and the\u00a0youngest volunteer member of VICSES.<\/p>\n
Originally from North Carolina USA, Joshua joined the Bellarine SES to help strengthen the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a neurological disorder called Asperger’s Syndrome, or as most of you might know as Autism,\u201d Joshua said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am on the high end of the spectrum, so I can function almost like anyone else, yet I think differently from everyone else.<\/p>\n
\u201cJoining the SES was a big deal for me and in doing so, I have already received my Provide First Aid certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Joshua said he would never have joined the SES if it weren\u2019t for being home schooled.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was pulled out of primary school in year 5 because I was bullied due to my Autism,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey didn’t like that I was different, and ever since I have been home schooled I have learned social skills, as well as a numerous amount of other things, I have gained the confidence to do things I never thought I would do.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast month I had the honour of laying the wreath at the memorial on Anzac Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Joshua said his father Russell Harrison,\u00a0Controller of the Bellarine SES Unit, had inspired him to do such great things.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope everyone who reads this realises, just because you may be different, or lack confidence, does not mean you will fail in this world, but if you put time into what you\u2019re trying to accomplish, you will do great things.<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, I hope this article helps all those who try to stay quiet in the community to do great things to benefit the community and I hope more people do amazing feats as I am doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
The South West Region responded to 3,640 emergency events last year and at present has 654 volunteers.<\/p>\n
VICSES Chief Officer of Operations Tim Wiebusch said the national campaign on May 23 was an important day of appreciation for volunteers who selflessly dedicated their time and skills to help their communities during times of greatest need.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
