CELEBRATIONS have begun for the 150th anniversary of the Barwon Heads Primary School (BHPS), with a series of community events to be held throughout the year.<\/p>\n

The school’s history dates to 1875, and the original site was on two acres of land in Connewarre.<\/p>\n

Classes began in a single schoolroom, with the teacher’s residence attached.<\/p>\n

As part of the 150th celebrations, BHPS seeks to raise $150,000 to revitalise an outdoor learning space.<\/p>\n

Festivities officially launched with a special assembly on Friday last week, where students, staff, alums and the wider community came together.<\/p>\n

Among the attendees was Dorothy (Dot) Sutcliffe, a much-loved former student and teacher whose ties to the school span four generations.<\/p>\n

Dot first walked through the school gates as a student in 1941 and returned as a teacher in 1957. She spent the next 25 years teaching at BHPS until her retirement in 1992.<\/p>\n

Dot’s children also attended the school. Her granddaughter, Sharna Renfrey, was also a student and is now a teacher at BHPS, and Dot’s great-grandson, Percy Sutas, will start next year.<\/p>\n

Dot said Barwon Heads Primary School had always been a huge part of her life.<\/p>\n

“I was lucky enough to teach in the town I love, and it was so special to see my own children go through the school. I even taught my son Stephen and my daughter Rhonda – although Rhonda thought I picked on her, which I probably did.<\/p>\n

“The school has always had a wonderful community, and I made many friends over my time there. Even now, when I’m out and about, I still have former students stop for a chat, which I love.”<\/p>\n

BHPS principal Rob Bennetts said the new outdoor learning space would be an exciting step forward for the school.<\/p>\n

“Outdoor learning gives kids the chance to be active, explore, and connect with nature, which we know has huge benefits for their learning and wellbeing.<\/p>\n

“This space will be something that students can enjoy for years to come, and we’re really excited to see it come to life.”<\/p>\n

To support this milestone, the school has introduced a Community Sponsorship Program, inviting local businesses to participate in the celebrations.<\/p>\n

Events planned throughout the year, including:<\/strong><\/p>\n

September 18 \u2013 Community Open Day: A chance for past and present students, families, and community members to explore the school, share memories, and view historical displays.<\/p>\n

October 18 \u2013 Fundraising Dinner & Auction: A special evening at the Barwon Heads Hotel featuring entertainment and a live fundraising auction.<\/p>\n

November 13 \u2013 Whole School Performance at Costa Hall: A celebration of Barwon Heads Primary School through the decades, showcasing student performances.<\/p>\n

As part of the 150-year celebrations, the school is also collecting old school photos, memorabilia, and historical stories. Community members with items or memories to share are invited to contact the school by emailing schoolcouncilbhps@gmail.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n
