A NEW roundabout will be introduced near Barwon Heads Airport to make a busy intersection simpler and safer.<\/p>\n
The major upgrade in Connewarre will involve construction at the Barwon Heads Road, Blackrock Road and Staceys Road intersection with new safety barriers.<\/p>\n
Works have started and are expected to take up to 10 months to complete, weather permitting.<\/p>\n
Bellarine MP Alison Marchant said the project would have multiple benefits.<\/p>\n
“Keeping people safe on our roads is our number one priority – this new roundabout will make this intersection safer and simpler for the people who use it every day whether they’re walking, riding or driving.”<\/p>\n
Barwon Heads Road is a busy tourist route and growth in Armstrong Creek and Marshall has also contributed to increased traffic.<\/p>\n
According to the state government, which is delivering the project, more than 10,000 vehicles used the intersection during the peak summer season, including approximately 1,000 trucks and other heavy vehicles.<\/p>\n
The new roundabout will improve sight lines and allow people to find an appropriate gap to cross the intersection.<\/p>\n
Works will also include the installation of left and right turning lanes into the airport, relocating the existing bus stops to the approach of the new roundabout and implementing a lower speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour, as well as upgrading line marking, signage and street lighting to improve visibility.<\/p>\n
Cyclists will benefit from dedicated on-road bicycle lanes on Barwon Heads Road while there’ll be new pedestrian paths and refuges.<\/p>\n
New parking areas on Staceys Road near bus stops are set to make it easier for parents dropping off and picking up school children.<\/p>\n
During the works, residents are asked to plan ahead, particularly during peak hour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
