LEARNER drivers will have the chance to clock up supervised driving hours in Ocean Grove thanks to the expansion of the Transport Accident Commission’s L2P program.<\/p>\n
The City of Greater Geelong has stationed a new fleet vehicle in the area to provide opportunities for local L-platers to upskill to their probationary license.<\/p>\n
The TAC L2P Program pairs young people with fully licensed volunteer driving mentors in supervised sessions.<\/p>\n
It aims to help young people who may not otherwise have access to a vehicle or a licensed driver.<\/p>\n
City of Greater Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said having a car in Ocean Grove would no doubt improve access to the program.<\/p>\n
“Previously, the closest vehicle was over 20 minutes away, so it’s valuable to have an accessible location for young drivers to get the experience they need behind the wheel,” Cr Kontelj said.<\/p>\n
The opportunity has been made possible thanks to support from the Leopold, Ocean Grove Barwon Heads, Portarlington-Drysdale and Queenscliff Point Lonsdale Lions Club as well as the Community Bank Leopold.<\/p>\n
“We greatly appreciate this generous contribution to help the local youth become safe, confident drivers,” he added.<\/p>\n
During the last financial year, 202 learner drivers have participated in the program, with 56 learners graduating to their P-plates.<\/p>\n
Leopold Lions Club president Rhiannon Russell said the L2P program was deserving of support.<\/p>\n
“The L2P program certainly qualifies for the Lions organisation’s mantra of caring for and aiding the community.”<\/p>\n
Community Bank Leopold secretary Bronwyn Shearer echoed her sentiment.<\/p>\n
“[We are] proud to support the Lions clubs with funding over three years for the Geelong TAC L2P Program.<\/p>\n
“Our commitment in working together to meet the needs of our community is well established and we are pleased to be involved in such a worthwhile project.”<\/p>\n
To be considered for the TAC L2P Program, both learner drivers and potential volunteer mentors are required to complete an application form and undergo an assessment.<\/p>\n
