{"id":102846,"date":"2025-04-25T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=102846"},"modified":"2025-04-23T20:00:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T10:00:28","slug":"stories-of-the-edge-a-weekend-of-diversity-and-inclusion-under-one-roof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/stories-of-the-edge-a-weekend-of-diversity-and-inclusion-under-one-roof\/","title":{"rendered":"Stories of the Edge &#8211; a weekend of diversity and inclusion under one roof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A SMORGASBORD of more than 30 artists sharing their poetry, music, art and stories &#8211; all of which are offered by indigenous, refugee, LGBTQIA+ and all abilities communities, along with wellbeing and environmental advocates &#8211; will greet Sacrededge Festival goers this May.<\/p>\n<p>People will be invited to move beyond being entertained, into listening to and connecting with:<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Nations music<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Led by award-winning Candice Lorrae, emerging musicians from the Archie Roach legacy project Singing our Futures will tell their stories and perform.<\/p>\n<p>Wiradjuri writer Glenn Loughrey will team up with award winning blues musician Fiona Boyes in a &#8220;Blak and Blues&#8217; exchange<\/p>\n<p><strong>LGBTQIA+ supporters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Along with a thought-provoking presentation on Ageing with Pride, attendees will hear from Archie Beetle whose organisation Queer Town provides training for institutions to improve the experiences of LGBTIQA+ communities.<\/p>\n<p>Renowned poet Padraig O&#8217;Tuama will encourage people to consider issues around social justice, while children and adults alike will be delighted by magician and actor Em Chandler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refugee stories<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Awale Ahmed will return to the festival, a multilingual writer, storyteller and advocate for social justice and refugee rights from Somalia. The event will also welcome Salma Gul as she tells her immigration story.<\/p>\n<p>A delicious Persian meal will be offered on the Saturday night by a local Iranian community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Care for the planet and wellbeing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From Deakin University&#8217;s local Marine Research Centre, Dr Prue Francis will enlighten attendees with stories about kelp to help mitigate climate change while Laura Billings from Parents for Climate will explore ways the community can contribute to sustainability and climate action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All abilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Local artist Bree-Arne Manley and Associate Professor Lorna Hallahan will speak about advocacy and policy making for all abilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Art on show<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An exhibition of Indigenous art from the Torch project will adorn walls, while a visual art exhibition will launch on the Saturday, and a beautiful Ocean Labyrinth will be installed in nearby Citizen Park.<\/p>\n<p>Supported by the Borough of Queenscliffe and Queenscliff Music Festival, Sacrededge will be held at the Queenscliff Uniting Church, on the corner of Hesse and Stokes Streets from Friday, May 2 until May 4.<\/p>\n<p>For the full program, art exhibition information and festival tickets, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/unitingqueenscliff.org.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unitingqueenscliff.org.au<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\/\/SPONSORED CONTENT<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A SMORGASBORD of more than 30 artists sharing their poetry, music, art and stories &#8211; all of which are offered by indigenous, refugee, LGBTQIA+ and all abilities communities, along with wellbeing and environmental advocates &#8211; will greet Sacrededge Festival goers this May.
