{"id":103257,"date":"2025-05-08T04:00:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T18:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=103257"},"modified":"2025-05-07T16:40:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T06:40:43","slug":"bch-staff-may-50k-fundraiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/bch-staff-may-50k-fundraiser\/","title":{"rendered":"BCH step out in fundraiser to help colleague"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STAFF at Bellarine Community Health (BCH) have taken a special interest in this year\u2019s May 50K event to help a colleague diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).<\/p>\n<p>In the challenge, participants walk or run at least 50km throughout the month of May to raise funds for life-changing research into the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, BCH staffer Kate McLean received the shock diagnosis of MS. The 47-year-old had suffered years of chronic migraines, headaches and fatigue but had put the symptoms down to being a busy working mother of three teenagers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe diagnosis knocked the wind out of our sails, and the fear was very real,\u201d Ms McLean said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the more educated we became, I realised that ending up in a wheelchair is not definite, in fact, it\u2019s not even likely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is no known cure for MS and it typically strikes young people in the prime of their lives, with the average age of diagnosis being 30 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy neurologist told me that when he was in medical school in the 2010s, there were only four types of MS treatments available, now there are more than 10,\u201d Ms McLean said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thank my lucky stars that we live in this wonderful country where my very expensive treatment every six months is free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recently revealed her condition to her colleagues at BCH, who are now throwing their support behind the May 50K event to walk and run throughout the month of May.<\/p>\n<p>She is incredibly grateful for the support of her colleagues and BCH to help raise funds for ongoing research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a tough ride so far, but made so much easier thanks to my beautiful family, gorgeous friends, amazing work colleagues and our health system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy outlook on so many things has changed. I\u2019ve learnt to &#8211; finally &#8211; start putting myself first.
