THIS year’s United Energy Around the Bay officially launched this week as it partners with Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision.<\/p>\n

Three-time Grand Tour stage winner and Hendry’s bike store owner Simon Gerrans and UCI Women’s WorldTour cyclist Sarah Gugante led the way at the Albert Park launch event, unveiling the new jerseys, designed to symbolise the energy, connection and diversity of riders.<\/p>\n

The annual event draws thousands of participants each year and will raise funds to support Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision in researching bone marrow failure syndromes.<\/p>\n

While Around the Bay does not officially start until October 26, the rivalry is already fierce between former Carlton player and incumbent Lorne coach Ed Curnow and former Collingwood and Carlton player Alex Fasolo.<\/p>\n

“I’m surprised Alex does that much exercise as we couldn’t get him out to train during his footy career,” Curnow quipped.<\/p>\n

Fasolo replied: “It’s on! Lap the Track is 5km and while something tells me Ed’s in better nick than I am, I reckon we can do this race. I’m very excited but will need some good coaching from Sarah or Simon.”<\/p>\n

Around the Bay has now been running for more than 30 years and is the ultimate bike celebration of Port Phillip Bay.<\/p>\n

Participants will have five distance options to choose from, including the 135km, with riders starting in Geelong and catching the ferry to Sorento before heading to Albert Park; and The Classic, which follows a 220km circuit of Port Phillip Bay.<\/p>\n

Former AFL player and co-founder of Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision Nick Riewoldt said it was a privilege to again partner with Bicycle Network for the event.<\/p>\n
