FUEL retailers across Victoria would be required to report real-time prices under draft regulations now open for public consultation.<\/p>\n
The proposal, released by the state government this week, invites Victorians to give feedback on the planned system via the Engage Victoria website before June 26.<\/p>\n
Consumer Affairs Minister Nick Staikos said the plan would make it easier for motorists to find the cheapest fuel in their area.<\/p>\n
“Making price reporting mandatory means motorists across the state will have access to reliable information to plan when and where they fill up the car,” he said.<\/p>\n
The rules would apply to more than 1,500 service stations, with prices to feed directly into a new fuel finder feature on the Service Victoria app.<\/p>\n
Government modelling suggests the system could save families hundreds of dollars a year by helping them avoid peak prices.<\/p>\n
Government Services Minister Natalie Hutchins said the tool would expand the app’s growing list of services.<\/p>\n
“The fuel finder feature on the Service Victoria app will give motorists access to real time fuel prices from service stations across the state,” she said.<\/p>\n
While commercial fuel apps already exist, the state tool will include more providers and show prices without promoting individual retailers.<\/p>\n
