THE number of letters being posted around the country is on the decline, with Australia Post making the decision to remove some of its Street Posting Boxes (SPB).<\/p>\n
Community members around Geelong have noticed the boxes disappearing, including two in Manifold Heights recently.<\/p>\n
An Australia Post spokesperson said letter volumes have dropped to levels not seen since the 1950s.<\/p>\n
“Australia Post is streamlining its network to remove SPBs with very low usage or those subject to repeated vandalism attacks.<\/p>\n
“By finding more efficient ways to collect dwindling letter volumes, our posties can be more focused on delivering the increasing numbers of parcels flowing through our network.”<\/p>\n
The increase in parcels is a priority for Australia Post and ensuring they are able to meet demand.<\/p>\n
“The latest online shopping report revealed 9.8 million Australians regularly shop online,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
“Australia Post is committed to delivering for our customers and evolving our network to meet their needs.”<\/p>\n
Continuing to check underused boxes is also contributing to significant and unnecessary costs in fuel, work hours and maintenance.<\/p>\n
Australia Post is required to check and clear at least 10,000 post boxes every day, with the network increasing over the years to include more than the minimum requirement.<\/p>\n
Australia Post will be trialling new formats that provide letter and parcel lodgement and delivery.<\/p>\n
