{"id":106336,"date":"2025-07-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=106336"},"modified":"2025-07-22T19:01:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T09:01:23","slug":"naidoc-celebration-starts-queenscliff-holiday-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/naidoc-celebration-starts-queenscliff-holiday-program\/","title":{"rendered":"NAIDOC celebration starts Queenscliff holiday program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Queenscliff Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre was a hive of activity last week, as the Victorian Fisheries Authority launched its winter school holiday program.<\/p>\n<p>The program started on Monday with a well-attended NAIDOC Week celebration, which began with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner and education officer Ash Skinner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/DSC07220-2_50439.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1013\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wadawurrung Traditional Owner and education officer Ash Skinner led the Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony in Queenscliff.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A large group gathered for the event, before heading inside to explore the centre&#8217;s marine creatures and interactive displays, with the touch tank proving a hit with both kids and adults alike.<\/p>\n<p>Queenscliff program manager Leanne Gunthorpe said the school holiday program aimed to give children a chance to marvel at the natural world, and to see and interact with animals they wouldn&#8217;t typically have the opportunity to get close to.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/DSC07229-2_50541.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We just want people to get out there and be curious and kind and respectful,&#8221; she said, noting the importance of stewardship was a key learning the VFA hoped youngsters take away from their experience,&#8221; Gunthorpe said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It goes back to sustainability and looking after country and acknowledging who was here originally, and how they looked after Country, because if they didn&#8217;t look after Country, we wouldn&#8217;t have the country that we have.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/DSC07240-2_50453.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1061\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Wadawurrung practices of looking after Country and caring for Country, is what we call stewardship, and stewardship&#8217;s a central bit of looking after environments and fishing, because if you don&#8217;t look after your fish and you don&#8217;t care for them and you take too much, you won&#8217;t have them.
