JUNIOR AFL players from New South Wales are making their way across the border for a State of Origin-style game, in support of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) research\u00a0and prevention.<\/p>\n
Raising money for local charity River’s Gift, 350 players aged between 7 and 16 will make the 957km journey for this weekend’s games.<\/p>\n
The Ocean Grove Cobras will host Sydney team Glebe Greyhounds for the weekend and seventh instalment of the annual event.<\/p>\n
Ocean Grove Cobras Junior AFL State of Origin co-ordinator Aaron White said the weekend is more than just a football carnival.<\/p>\n
“It’s about uniting communities and making a tangible difference in the fight against SIDS.<\/p>\n
“By supporting River’s Gift, we contribute to crucial research aimed at preventing these heartbreaking losses.”<\/p>\n
The concept of the game came from former Geelong schoolmates Cain Sarah and Harvey Stephenson, who wanted their sons to compete in an AFL match, but were living in different states.<\/p>\n
The game found a greater purpose when teaming up with River’s Gift co-founder Karl Waddell, who lost his son River to SIDS in 2011.<\/p>\n
Over the years, the match has grown exponentially. Last year’s game included 350 Ocean Grove players travelling to Sydney and raising $50,000, surpassing targets by $20,000 and a long way from the 20 players it initially started with.<\/p>\n
“When this idea was first conceived eight years ago, none of us imagined it would evolve into such a deeply rooted tradition,” Glebe Greyhounds vice president Simon Tracy said.<\/p>\n
“It’s a testament to the power of sport, community and the shared commitment to making a difference.”<\/p>\n
The junior teams will take to the Steeline Ray Menzies Oval in Ocean Grove this weekend, with all donations and event proceeds being donated to River’s Gift.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
