GEELONG AFLW coach Dan Lowther has voiced his support for the existing investments into the league, saying that the competition will continue to improve with time.<\/p>\n
It comes after reports the AFL informed clubs of the AFLW losing $50 million per year, as it heads into its 10th season.<\/p>\n
Lowther, who has coached the Cats since 2022, believes critics should have more faith the AFLW is heading in the right direction.<\/p>\n
“The players are fully aware and they hear the outside noise,” he said.<\/p>\n
“I think as an industry, we just need to calm down a touch and invest in the fact that it’s going to take time for the game to improve.”<\/p>\n
While some officials have prioritised improvements on field, Lowther claims more support for club coaching staff may also assist with this goal so they are better backed to teach the game.<\/p>\n
“Resourcing into coaching [is crucial], so that we can actually improve the fundamental and the game IQ of the players,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Over time, that investment is going to have a huge payoff.”<\/p>\n
Lowther said limiting the investment into the AFLW may undo the work that has already been done in getting the league to where it is today.<\/p>\n
He believes it could also throw young, aspiring female footballers off pursuing a career in the sport professionally.<\/p>\n
“We still need our young girls who are seven, eight, nine-years-old to look up and be motivated to reach and aspire to play at an elite level of football,” he said.<\/p>\n
“[The investment] needs to be there still, and it needs to be accepted, but it needs to have time and patience.<\/p>\n
“I think most people are understanding of that, but it’s just one of those things that we’ve just got to keep putting out into the ether \u2013 we’re all in it for the right reasons, which is a positive one.”<\/p>\n
Geelong will start its 2025 season against reigning premiers North Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium on August 16 at 3.35pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
