THE popular Nature Stewards program will return this spring, and will feature a special focus on marine and coastal ecosystems for the first time.<\/p>\n

Running from August 30 to November 15, the 10-week course offers participants the chance to explore topics such as geology, waterways, coastal wildlife, seaweeds and seagrass, estuaries and wetlands.<\/p>\n

Sessions will be held on Saturdays at Eastern Hub Geelong and Leopold Community Centre, with field trips to biodiversity hotspots across the region.<\/p>\n

Delivered by the Victorian National Parks Association in partnership with the City of Greater Geelong, the program features guest speakers including Traditional Owners, council officers, researchers, and environmental volunteers, and is designed for adults of all backgrounds, especially those new to environmental education.<\/p>\n

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj welcomed the return of the program. “Nature Stewards is a fantastic opportunity for our community to connect with the natural world and learn how to care for it,” Cr Kontelj said.<\/p>\n

“We’re proud to fund this initiative again in 2025, helping residents build knowledge, skills, and a deeper appreciation for our local environment.”<\/p>\n

Cr Emma Sinclair, deputy chair of the council’s environment and circular economy portfolio, said the program was a grassroots way for the community to grow their passion for the environment and the great outdoors.<\/p>\n

“This program empowers people to take action \u2013 whether it’s improving their garden, joining a volunteer group, or simply sharing what they’ve learned with others,” Cr Sinclair said. “It’s about building a community of passionate, informed stewards for our region’s future.”<\/p>\n

Dr Maddy Willcock, Nature Stewards co-ordinator, said the program offered many exciting opportunities, including expert guest speakers and guided field trips.<\/p>\n

“Nature Stewards is a great way to discover more about your local area, connect with nature, and meet other like-minded people,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Whether you’re curious to know more about your local natural places, keen to discover a new interest, or just want to meet other like-minded people, come join the Nature Stewards program starting end of August.”<\/p>\n

Fees for Greater Geelong residents are $175 ($45 concession), and non-residents pay $350 ($90 concession).<\/p>\n

Scholarships are available via an expression of interest on the application form.<\/p>\n
