{"id":108072,"date":"2025-08-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=108072"},"modified":"2025-08-14T10:22:31","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T00:22:31","slug":"local-lifesavers-achieve-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/local-lifesavers-achieve-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"Local lifesavers achieve excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast and Bellarine&#8217;s best lifesavers have cleaned up at the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/local-lifesavers-dominate-awards-of-excellence\/\">Life Saving Victoria Awards of Excellence<\/a>, amassing more than ten statewide honours.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes from Point Lonsdale through to Lorne were recognised for their outstanding achievements and contributions across the aquatic industry.<\/p>\n<p>Anglesea SLSC president David Marsh took home the Graeme Long Memorial Medal for Volunteer of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Marsh has been part of the surf lifesaving club for more than 40 years, first starting as a nipper when he was just five years old.<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong local has been club president at Anglesea for the past four years and has served in many volunteering positions throughout his tenure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/08\/057A9527_92174.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sonia Kinsey from the Ocean Grove SLSC was crowned LSV Coach of the Year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said he was incredibly proud of his new achievement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s amazing. You don&#8217;t do it for accolades\u2026 I do it because I love the club, and I love the people, it&#8217;s a truly flattering honour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What keeps me around is seeing the impact myself and others can have on people from a lifesaving perspective in saving them, being there and supporting them through tough times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s also got to be my kids. The direct impact I can see I can have on them and their friends &#8211; being a positive role model, it&#8217;s a real tangible thing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/08\/056A0614_95359.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocean Grove lifesaver Grayson Hyde was awarded with Youth Athlete of the Year status.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The award is particularly poignant for me, Graeme [Long] was someone I really looked up to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anglesea also landed on the podium in two other categories, with Julia Phillips winning Athlete of the Year (Open) and James Betson winning Volunteer Trainer of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Grove SLSC stalwart Sonia Kinsey took home the Coach of the Year gong, while fellow clubman Grayson Hyde was awarded with Youth Athlete of the Year status.<\/p>\n<p>Lorne&#8217;s Michael Garbelotto was presented with Beach Lifeguard of the Year, Fairhaven&#8217;s Poppy Morrison was victorious in the Volunteer Assessor of the Year, and Wye River athlete Michael Barrand was Athlete of the Year (Masters).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast and Bellarine&#8217;s best lifesavers have cleaned up at the Life Saving Victoria Awards of Excellence, amassing more than ten statewide honours.
