THE Lara community is rejoicing following a decision to not proceed with a waste-to-energy incineration facility in Lara.<\/p>\n
Today (Wednesday August 20), Recycling Victoria announced successful operating applicants under Victoria’s waste-to-energy scheme.<\/p>\n
The proponents of the Lara project, Prospect Hill International, were not granted a license, and thus cannot operate such a facility.<\/p>\n
The facility planned to process 400,000 tonnes of residual municipal solid waste as well as commercial and industrial waste every year.<\/p>\n
Its proposed location was 350m from the nearest home and just over 1km from the Lara town centre.<\/p>\n
Recycling Victoria’s decision comes after years of advocacy against the proposal from community activists, businesses and Lara MP Ella George.<\/p>\n
Residents expressed concerns about the project, including its proximity to homes and schools, and its potential risks to health, safety and the environment.<\/p>\n
Ms George said the decision was a great outcome for Lara and the wider community.<\/p>\n
