DRYSDALE Soccer Club\u2019s Under 12 girls\u2019 team is a force to be reckoned with.<\/p>\n
The Drysdale Diamonds remain undefeated this season, boast the league\u2019s highest goal kicker for their age group and had a couple of player\u2019s trial with the state school girls\u2019 team.<\/p>\n
Coached by former Australian representative Tony Calleja, the girls have developed into a strong and enthusiastic team since they began playing together in April.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile some of our girls play for fun, others are keen to move up into the senior team and one day maybe even play for the Matildas,\u201d Tony said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe if they keep at it, and keep approaching the game with the passion they have now, it\u2019s definitely possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
The team comprises Beth Taylor, Eliza Gay, Emily Calleja, Evie Matheson, Jordan Sollars, Leisel Huddart, Lillya Butler, Madeline Gay, Meg Swinton, Rameesha Aizaz and Scarlett Brailsford.<\/p>\n
Leisel has scored 15 goals to date and is the top goal scorer in the Under 12s in the league, while Emily and Beth were selected to trial with the Victorian School girls\u2019 team, but just missed out.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been a fantastic experience so far, watching the girls develop into such a strong,\u00a0enthusiastic team,\u201d Tony said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are all eager to learn and a pleasure to coach and we look forward to having lots more fun throughout the season.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tony in his youth played for the Victorian Institute of Sport and Australian Institute of Sport as an elite goalkeeper in both Australia and overseas.<\/p>\n
He has played under coaches such as Ange Postecoglou (former soccer Roos coach) and Ernie Merrick (Newcastle United Coach) and alongside players such as Harry Kewell.<\/p>\n
The girls took on a top of the table clash against Bell Park at Drysdale Sporting Precinct on Saturday, with the game ending in a draw 2-2.<\/p>\n
