{"id":108627,"date":"2025-09-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=108627"},"modified":"2025-08-27T17:28:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T07:28:18","slug":"volunteers-needed-at-bellarine-historical-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/volunteers-needed-at-bellarine-historical-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteers needed at Bellarine Historical Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Bellarine Historical Society is seeking additional volunteers to help extend the opening hours of their Old Court House Museum in Drysdale.<\/p>\n<p>The local group are hoping to attract enough new volunteers to allow them to open the historical facility every Sunday starting from next weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1977, the Bellarine Historical Society has preserved the history of the Bellarine through a collection of images, maps, rate books, church and school records, old agricultural and farming equipment and old memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>Dedicated volunteers undertake a range of duties from front of house operations in the museum to more in-depth research work depending on capability and knowledge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/09\/IMG_2204_69541.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Old Court House Musuem at 11 High Street in Drysdale.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Group member Ann Cullen said people can come along and volunteer even if they are new to town and have little knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t need to be familiar with history or the area; in fact, I walked in here knowing nothing\u2026 we just need bums on seats, essentially.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are scratching to get two people\u2026 I guess because we are oldies,&#8221; fellow member Sue Wall added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Currently we are going to operate every second Sunday, but ideally in the warmer months we&#8217;d like to be open each Sunday and to do that you need at least two people here.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/09\/IMG_2183_69552.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The museum displays and preserves local objects that are pertinent to the Bellarine Peninsula.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The oldies love a chat, so sometimes with two people you can get a bit caught up\u2026 we&#8217;d love to have even three volunteers on at once.&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>The Bellarine Historical Society are entirely self-funded and raise funds to continue operating through book sales, donations, grants and memberships.<\/p>\n<p>They also host open days, guest speaker events and cooking competitions to help keep the doors open.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Cullen said the group would celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/09\/IMG_2186_69611.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bellarine Historical Society are hopeful of securing more volunteers to help extend the opening hours of its Old Court House Museum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very interested in having nice displays of memorabilia up in the museum to celebrate this occasion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a book launch, a documentary, photobooks, a scone making competition and more in the pipeline for the celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anything people can contribute to the museum, even if it&#8217;s just on loan, we would love to hear from them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For more information and to start volunteering, head to bellarinehistory.org or to the Bellarine Historical Society Facebook page.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Bellarine Historical Society is seeking additional volunteers to help extend the opening hours of their Old Court House Museum in Drysdale.
