{"id":109664,"date":"2025-09-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=109664"},"modified":"2025-09-18T11:25:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T01:25:04","slug":"local-pair-making-a-splash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/local-pair-making-a-splash\/","title":{"rendered":"Local pair making a splash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A PAIR of water polo players are ready to make a splash when they represent Victoria for the very first time.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Marlins&#8217; Katie Parnell and Isla Anderson, who are both 15-years-old, will be competing at the National State Championships for water polo later this month in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>The event will bring together players from all over the country for five days of fierce competition.<\/p>\n<p>It was a love of netball and swimming that inspired Isla to try her hand at water polo. She&#8217;s eager to see her efforts in training translate to a strong performance in the pool.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/B07K9244-KatieParnel_67505.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie Parnell shoots while Isla Anderson defends.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve put in a lot of work over the last few weeks, and we are hoping for some good results,&#8221; Isla said.<\/p>\n<p>For Katie, it was a family connection to the sport that got her into the water, with both her father and uncle having played water polo for many years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/B07K9230-IslaAnderso_67546.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Isla Anderson and Katie Parnell are ready to represent their state with pride.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had an idea to get it started and have a go at it&#8230; I didn&#8217;t really want to play at the start funnily enough, but now I love it and really enjoy it,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s expecting some tough competition, and the nerves are already setting in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve both been playing for about four years and the dream is to play in the Olympics one day,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/B07K9195-IslaAnderso_67507.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The pair hail from the Surf Coast and Bellarine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Both players are looking forward to meeting and connecting with their fellow competitors from across the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are both bottom age of the division, so we don&#8217;t really know many of the players, so we hope to create some new friends,&#8221; Katie said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A PAIR of water polo players are ready to make a splash when they represent Victoria for the very first time.
