NEW viewing platforms are reshaping how tourists experience the Great Ocean Road, with major milestones reached at the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge.<\/p>\n
Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said the Twelve Apostles Visitor Experience Centre would be “a massive boost for local tourism along the Great Ocean Road while also supporting more than 90 jobs during construction”.<\/p>\n
“The topping out of the centre is a major milestone in this project,” Mr Dimopoulos said.<\/p>\n
The $126 million redevelopment, part of the Geelong City Deal, will include a visitor centre, welcome garden, rooftop garden and new lookouts, with completion due late next year.<\/p>\n
At Loch Ard Gorge, the $8 million “Poombeeyt Koontapool” lookout has been unveiled, named in Keerray Woorroong language meaning “Breath of the Whale”.<\/p>\n
Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes said the project highlighted the cultural and environmental values of the coastline.<\/p>\n
“The completion of the visitor centre’s main structure offers a real sense of the amazing experience visitors can expect when the centre opens next year,” Ms Symes said.<\/p>\n
The design of the new Gorge platform was informed by the story of Koontapool, the Southern Right Whale, and blends into the landscape with sweeping views of the blowhole.<\/p>\n
Seating, signage and upgraded paths have been added to improve access for thousands of visitors each month.<\/p>\n
The project finalises stage one of the Shipwreck Coast Masterplan, which also delivered the Port Campbell Creek pedestrian bridge.<\/p>\n
The Great Ocean Road projects are intended to boost tourism and extend visitor stays, supporting local businesses and communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
