{"id":110179,"date":"2025-09-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=110179"},"modified":"2025-09-24T16:16:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T06:16:20","slug":"harrison-helps-australia-win-surfing-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/harrison-helps-australia-win-surfing-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"Harrison helps Australia win surfing gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BARWON Heads surfer Ellie Harrison has helped Australia secure its first open team gold medal surf at the ISA World Surfing Games since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Her 5th place finish in the semi-finals at La Bocana and El Sunzal pulled the country over the line in the overall rankings to oust Peru, Spain and France for top honours.<\/p>\n<p>The Australia Irukandjis&#8217; win in El Salvador ended more than a decade of close calls, including four team silver medals since the team&#8217;s last gold, and signals the start of a new golden era for Australian surfing.<\/p>\n<p>It was Australia&#8217;s sixth team gold medal in ISA World Surfing Games history, and its 16th overall team medal, reinforcing Australia&#8217;s status as the most successful nation in the event&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/AUS_ath_Ellie_Harris_69706.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ellie Harrison with a strong layback snap. Photo: SEAN EVANS\/ISA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Harrison&#8217;s strong performance was backed up by a gold medal from 19-year-old Dane Henry and bronze medals from Sally Fitzgibbons and Morgan Cibilic.<\/p>\n<p>Team Australia coach Adam Dufner reflected on the collaborative team atmosphere of the Irukundjis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has been a privilege and an honour to coach and support this amazing team of incredibly talented athletes and wonderful young individuals. This event has been a highlight of my coaching career.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Australian captain Sally Fitzgibbons echoed his excitement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our team really connected through our values of how much it means to us to represent our nation,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every individual athlete, coach and staff member woke up every day ready to take on the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Out of every ISA medal I&#8217;ve won, this is the one that stands out.
