AN INTERIM recycling site has opened in North Geelong, after the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre (GRRC) was closed due to safety concerns in March.<\/a><\/p>\n

Located at 21 Slevin Street in North Geelong, the temporary recycling centre will fulfil the role of the GRRC, while the wait for its rebuild continues.<\/p>\n

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the new site will maintain vital recycling services.<\/p>\n

“While we work towards a new and improved resource centre, this temporary facility will make sure residents can continue recycling key items safely and responsibly.”<\/p>\n

The temporary site is for Geelong residents only and will not accept commercial waste.<\/p>\n

The original GRRC was closed to the public in March after falling into a state of disrepair, with an initial building condition report indicating structural issues at the site.<\/p>\n

Following further investigations and expert analysis, it was announced in<\/a> July that the Douro Street site would need to be rebuilt, with the City of Greater Geelong promising it would be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility for local residents.<\/p>\n

Environment and circular economy portfolio chair Cr Elise Wilkinson thanked the community for their patience.<\/p>\n

“This service will be a helpful option for residents until the main recycling centre at Douro Street is rebuilt.”<\/p>\n

The new location will accept the most common recyclables including cardboard, polystyrene, e-waste, gas bottles and car and truck batteries.<\/p>\n

Due to the new site being smaller in size and short-term, it cannot safely accept all waste. Accepted materials have been selected based on the high volumes previously received at the GRRC, and compliance with EPA regulations.<\/p>\n
